Running the Tickler is an original acrylic painting by Bryan Varnam. He enjoys painting scenes which capture the everyday life of the commercial fishermen. The two men in the painting are father and son, both generations have earned their livlihood from the coastal waters of North Carolina. Running the tickler refers to adjusting the length of the chain which is attached to a shrimp net. Its purpose is to run along the ocean floor to run the shrimp into the net. Over time the links of the chain become stretched causing the chain to become too long for the net. To decrease the length of the chain links are removed.
