Traditionally, a young Irish couple could only go courting, after the bands had been read and only under the watchful eye of the matchmaker. Here they are on a first date, which according to propriety, had them sitting in a car ( like the one in the painting) with their backs to each other. As the courting progressed the couple would be allowed closer contact but always with a chaperone. "No patty fingers if you please."
